The Geographic Incidence of Aurora and Magnetic Disturbance, Northern Hemisphere

چکیده

Fritz [see 7 of "References" at end of paper] in a famous memoir published in 1881 discussed the frequency and characteristics of aurora observed in the Northern Hemisphere during the years 1700 to 1872. Using observations during this 172-year period [8] he also constructed his well-known map of isochasms of equal auroral frequency. Beginning is made here in the statistical analysis of the auroral data since accumulated, a task of considerable magnitude if undertaken with any pretense at completeness. The present paper is concerned mainly with the variation with geographic position of the average daily frequency of aurora in high latitudes, and of geomagnetic disturbance. Since 1872 much observational material has accumulated but there

Earth and Space Science AuroraWatch UK: An Automated Aurora Alert System

The AuroraWatch UK aurora alert service uses a network of magnetometers from across the United Kingdom to measure the disturbance in the Earth’s magnetic field caused by the aurora borealis (northern lights). The service has been measuring disturbances in the Earth’s magnetic field from the UK and issuing auroral visibility alerts to its subscribers, since September 2000. These alerts have four...

Transpolar arcs observed simultaneously in both hemispheres

Two coexisting transpolar arcs are observed on 31 August 2005. We track the formation and motion of the arcs in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, using data from two independent satellites (Imager for Magnetopause to Aurora Global Exploration and a Defence Meteorological Satellite Program satellite). The observations are supported by supplementary ground-based ionospheric convection d...

PLANETARY SCIENCE Discovery of diffuse aurora on Mars

Planetary auroras reveal the complex interplay between an atmosphere and the surrounding plasma environment. We report the discovery of low-altitude, diffuse auroras spanning much of Mars’ northern hemisphere, coincident with a solar energetic particle outburst. The Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph, a remote sensing instrument on the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft, de...

Recon®guration and closure of lobe ̄ux by reconnection during northward IMF: possible evidence for signatures in cusp/cleft auroral emissions

Observations are presented of the response of the dayside cusp/cleft aurora to changes in both the clock and elevation angles of the interplanetary magnetic ®eld (IMF) vector, as monitored by the WIND spacecraft. The auroral observations are made in 630 nm light at the winter solstice near magnetic noon, using an all-sky camera and a meridian-scanning photometer on the island of Spitsbergen. Th...

Observations of ionospheric plasma flows within theta auroras

[1] This paper reports results from a detailed analysis of theta auroras that occurred during the passage of a magnetic cloud on 8 November 2000. The interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) was generally northward for more than 12 hours, while the y-component of the IMF changed signs several times. Auroral images of the Northern Hemisphere acquired from the Ultraviolet Imager (UVI) on board the Pol...
